A Few of My Favorite Things

Fridays will be a weekly wrap up of snippets of my favorite things from the week.  Because I am me, we are kicking off Favorite Things Friday on Saturday.

  • Toddlers kisses and the exaggerated puckered lips
  • Twins holding hands and running through the house together giggling
  • Big D's school work helpfully pointing out to his teacher that "My mom's feet are big".
  • My husband coming home earlier than expected.
  • Hearing my older kids reading to their siblings.
  • Bug organizing a concert and helping his brother and sister work on and practice their songs.
  • The director getting stage fright when it was his turn to sing.
  • Getting the mail and opening more Christmas cards than bills.
  • Timing right for the kids and I to watch their Dad get loaded with mud from the lake project.
  • Taking a long shower and not having the door knocked on once, or having any conversations through the door.

A Memory is a Picture Your Heart Takes

Aunt X 6

Squeeee! and other excited noises!

Some pretty big news today.  I received a text message this morning from my sister.  Baby #4 was in such a hurry to meet all the people who love her that she said - "Yeah, I'm not going to wait until October 13th, I want to hug my Mommy today"

Oh little Leah, you are soooo beautiful and I can't wait to hug you and love on you and tell you how special you are and make your Uncle remind me to let you get settled and take care of my own children.

You are a blessing to your Mom, Dad, 2 big sisters and your big brother.  It looks like one of your big sisters is also adjusting well to not being the baby anymore.

Signs of Spring

Bear enjoyed getting to be outside in the nice weather.
The jury is still out as to if she enjoyed her big brother "helping" her drive.

All the kiddos were big fans of seeing the baby chicks.  Now its Springtime.

The boys have been taking turns (and sometimes tag teaming) going with dad to the farm.  My oldest recently watched for the first time a calf being born.  He described it as "a little gross, mostly cool and awesome.  Do you know where baby calves come out Mom? I do....the BUTT!!!!!"

You can be thankful I didn't share pictures of that.

Just One Little Thing

I have been trying to do one little thing each day. Make a happy memory with my kids, each day. This isn't an entertain them and make sure they are nothing but happy a day long. This is a deliberate attempt to lighten up and do something with my kids.

I have so many memories of doing things with my Mom, Dad and Grandma. Mostly Mom and Grandma, we made Dad nervous sneaking up on him when he was sighting in rifles or welding in the shop. My memories include a lot of "it's time for a coffee break" and coming back to the house. He also tucked us in everynight. We crawled up in his lap and rode along when he fed cows. My favorite was catching him singing along with the radio, you couldn't let him know you heard him, or join in, because he would stop and I loved listening to dad sing. And how he would wink at me when he caught my eye.

With Mom, there was horseyback rides, baking cookies and cakes, homemade playdough, coloring, reading books, milking cows, crafts, putting together puzzles and about anything to keep us occupied. We lived next door to Grandma and she always had crafts, workbooks, construction paper, board games, gardening, and fun surprise activities like treasure hunts or a trip to town!

These small little activities which were cheap and usually quick are some of my favorite memories from my childhood. I want to make those kind of memories with my kids.  There is a lot of sending kids out to play, some pushing on the swings, watching them splash in the pool or run through the sprinkler in summer. Taking a quick walk around the block. Going to the playground and bringing lunch outside for a picnic. You get the idea.

Somedays, I want to do something extra special. Especially when we are housebound for an extended period.

Monday the Big D wanted a Wall-E costume. I made his brother one for a Halloween costume a few years ago. Plus D feels left out when his big brother is in preschool. So I measured him and grabbed a box from the garage. We cut out holes for arms and his head and grabbed paint and brushes.  Washable paint. He loved it, and really didn't get that dirty. I did the final touches and referred a toy Wall-E. It finished drying by the time we picked up J from preschool. Then I had to make improvements to the original because I didn't have as much detail as the new one.  My children played for hours with cardboard boxes that cost me $0 and about an hour and half of my time. As a bonus we were out of the subzero windchill temps. (Looking at the video I can tell baby sister entertained herself by emptying and scattering the contents of the laundry basket.)

Thursday we made kool-aid play dough. 5 minutes to make, with them taking turns dumping ingredients and stirring and several hours of playing at the table. How have I forgotten the joy of homemade playdough.  Limited colors is key. Too many options is a mess and a fight over who gets what. We made their favorite colors: red and green. Or cheery and lime as the boys love that the dough smelled good. (1 cup flour, 1/2 cup salt, 2 tsps cream of tartar, 1 packet kool-aide and 1 cup boiling water with a bit of oil. Mix, pour, stir, divide evenly and play)

Today I was looking online for ideas. I found a winner: (1) wrap wooden blocks with tin foil (2) have a treasure hunt. Cost $0 time to make under 5 min, entertainment value close to an hour. It was good practice for hiding Easter Eggs, even the baby liked finding treasure. They practiced counting skills to make sure they found them all and got clues for the few they missed each round. Next time I might dress them up like pirates....or do it outside.

Kid Season

When the Hubby and I first started our little family, and I was in the newborn haze of lack of sleep and new found extra love. One of my aunts told me of raising kids "the days are long, but the years are short".

How true I am finding that to be.  The days can be so incredibly long, sometimes difficult,  sometimes fun and happy, and many times lonely.  It's hard to explain feeling lonely when you are constantly surrounded by three little blessings. It can be.

The Hubby has been busy working with an extremely long and disappointing Harvest. We tend to think of Harvest being wrapped up by early to mid August. The amount of rain however had us finishing up the end of September with sprout damaged and bleached out wheat. This meant he was/is in the field whenever possible. It has also meant seeding winter wheat and combining safflower at the same time.

The latest rain effected us differently. I'm adjusting to being a SAHM and not working outside of the home. (A decision I don't regret a  would make over and over. It was the best choice for our situation and our family) It is still an adjustment. I miss the challenges, I'm a nerd but I miss the math and numbers,  I miss a schedule, adult conversation and life's stories from friends who are out of the diaper trenches. So when rainy days had him home more and coming in early...well. He was a little on the grumpy side stuck at home. I was loving having him here....during daylight hours!

So many times I have felt so lonely and trapped in the never ending requests and questions and dong the same things over and over. Reading the same book over and over. Then I blink and they wearing bigger clothes and performing new tricks. Asking for help a little less frequently.

The benefits are the little moments that make up the hours.

Dandelion bouquets every time they go outside.

Bedtime prayers and daily snuggles.

Watching them play. Especially listening to their made up stories. When they aren't arguing they are adorable.

Those smiles when I walk in the room. The giggles from the same hiding spot they have used four times in a row. Counting anywhere between 7 and 36 when its mom's turn to hide.

The number of compliments they dole out and lyrics they slaughter from songs they should probably know.  The made up tunes with limited and repeated words.

So I take the good along with the messes, spilled and broken glasses, horrors of potty training, pulled hair, spitup, endless laundry, tantrums, time consuming "help", crumbs, broken toys, interrupted sleep,  tears and whining.

The days are long but the years are short.

A Nicer House

Earlier this week, as requested by the boys', we stopped in on a Great Aunt for a visit.  Apparently a long overdue visit as they enjoyed themselves so much they didn't want to go home.  The next day following our visit began a relocation discussion.

Pre-Schooler:  Where are we going?
Me: We are going home.
Pre-Schooler:  Why are we going home?
Me: Because that's where we live.
Pre-Schooler: Well...I don't want to live there.
Me: Where should we live then?
Pre-Schooler:  Well...we could live with Brenda!
Big D: Yay! Bwenda!
Me:  Why don't you want to live at our house?
Pre-Schooler:  Because our house is not nice.
Pre-Schooler: But, Brenda's house is really nice, we should just live with her.
Big D:  Yay, Live Bwenda!
Me:  Why isn't our house nice?
Pre-Schooler:  Well...its not as nice as Brenda's.  We will live there now.
Big D:  Go Bwenda's now?

In my defense...though Brenda's house may in fact be nicer than mine...I feel it is at least in part due to her having grown up children and not Toddlers.  Also further inquiry into what constitutes "nice" was found to be "no toys all over the floor in a mess".  Which leads me to bet that niceness exists in the home that small children do not.

Communication is Key

Conversation with my Hubby last night.

Me: So have you noticed anything different?
Hubby:  {Looking around} Well, you haven't cut the Big D's hair
Me: No, he still won't let me any where near him with the clippers.

Hubby: Smart kid...I don't know what do you want me to notice?...that your plant is still alive?
Me:  Yes, my plant is still alive, but that's not it either.  It is around that area though.
Hubby:  You spent more money on a mirror.
Me:  Yes, and I hung it up a couple days ago.  Now the wall doesn't look so empty. Better right?
Hubby: {no comment}

So I learned two things last night.

  1.  The empty space on the wall only bothered me.
  2.  Apparently I am really proud of my single living plant...and giving bad haircuts.

My Husband is a lucky man :)

For the Love of a Nephew

An Aunt's love runs deep. So deep in fact that she will bust out her crafty, I-Got-A-Degree-In-Art-9-Years-Ago-Skills and apply them to make a Lightening McQueen Crazy 3 year old happy beyond his wildest dreams...for a least 5 minutes.

My sister in her spare time took a big honk'n piece of cardboard and painted, then cut out, The Toddler's favorite Pixar character and brought him to life. Hours and Days worth of work, envy from other Quasi-Cousins, for several minutes of awe and marvel. It ended up being one of his favorite birthday presents, of course homemade presents always are the best.

Because when you get something this cool, everyone needs to pose with it!
(PS-I am so strong I can pickup an entire car - Hooah!)

Me:  Look what Aunt B made for you honey!
Toddler:  LIGHTENING MAH-QUEEEEEN!!!!
Toddler: And who make me the eyes?
Me: Aunt B
Toddler:  Ohhh, who made me the wheels?
Me: Aunt B
Toddler:  Ooohh, and who made me the lights?
Me: Aunt B made it all for you, everything on Lightening McQueen she made just for you!
Toddler:  Oooh, she do really good job!.....Mommy, who make me Francesco?

He really does love it, he even has to give Lightening a hug every so often.

And of course like a responsible car owner, he makes sure to take him for a drive regularly.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Dear Hubby,

First of all, thank you again for the flowers you had delivered for my birthday. My little corner of the office smells divine. Thank you also for the phone call in the morning, and the little messages I kept finding throughout the day (facebook, email, IPad...haha).   It was a little hard to feel like celebrating my birthday without you, but overall it was still a nice day, and I so appreciated the effort you put in to be a part of it.

Your sister stopped in to visit over lunch after volleyball practice. My parents came to town to take me out for supper (and brought some yummy homemade cookie bars!).  I wish they could have stayed longer, 6 hours round trip travel time is a lot for only a few hours of visiting and supper...but it was so great to see them.  Your mom and sister stopped by later in the evening too, and dropped off a gift, it really is the coolest thing!  A light up shadow box. I felt pretty loved.

Flowers from the Hubby
(half way across the world, you still make my day extra special)

Seriously How Cool is this frame?!

I got a fun new scarf at work, lip balm, and all kinds of well wishes.
Totally missed my calling as a model....NOT! (Yes I am from the 80s, why do you ask?)

Over the weekend I did a little early birthday shopping for myself too!
Don't worry it was all on sale/clearance!
(PS - when you get back would it be too much to ask to build a closet just for my purses and scarves?)

Making a List and Checking it Twice!

My sister and I were talking the other day about how happy we both were at this point in our lives. We both are thankful for healthy children, being able have careers, and having our own place to call home.  And of course we both adore our husbands and are incredibly grateful we met them. That was the real jumping point of the conversation I guess.

We began talking about pre-qualifications we had made earlier in our lives, what our ideal mate would be like and how close we got. My sister's husband she claims is a 100% complete match. In her Junior High Health class they were supposed to list traits and characterizes of their dream partner. Can you believe she knew what she wanted in the 7th grade? Haha..I thought the Backstreet Boys were cool in the 7th grade...we are very different people....always have been. (PS - I no longer think the Backstreet Boys or really any boy band(s) are cool...it was a fad people!)

In college I had once rattled off a random list of traits to a friend when I was at a point of tired of being single.  Wondering if anyone was actually out there for me. My friend ended up telling me "no such man exists" after actually writing down my ridiculously long list. At the time I think she was wanting to set me up with someone, and wanted to match common interests. I don't remember everything on the list (and I doubt she kept it), but it is surprising how many of the "impossible" characteristics my Hubby met years later.

Her List
  • Black Hair
  • Brown Eyes
  • Over 6 foot
  • Older
  • Good with kids
  • Loves Animals
  • Music Lover
  • In Shape (apparently an afterthought requirement)

My List -

Really these 3 were the first things listed & ultimately thrown out on my Ideal Guy Checklist.

  • Over 6 foot - (Hubby is 5' 9")
  • Older  - (I am older by 7 months)
  • Must hate ACDC (sadly he is a fan, I am only a fan of their music if it’s being covered....I can't deny the lyrics are good and the beat is catchy.  However lets be honest, ACDC really sound like screaming 6-year-old-girls....yeah I said it!)

Oh but all the rest he nailed:

  • Hardworking (If I didn't earn it/get it for myself, I don't need it attitude)
  • Smart/Intelligent
  • Must be a John Wayne fan (this one is sketchy, my Hubby says he prefers Clint Eastwood - he hasn't admitted to not liking John Wayne...frankly because that could be a deal breaker)
  • Faithful
  • Loves to read
  • Funny/Good sense of Humor
  • Easy to Talk to (really this one is borderline, but there are days he blows my mind and I have never found anyone I would rather stay up all night talking to)
  • Manners - has 'em; uses 'em
  • Honest and Straight forward
  • Mechanical (something sexy about the smell of grease and being able to build/fix stuff)
  • Similar Morals
  • Has Faith & Lives it
  • Kind to others
  • Not Cocky (I can get along with almost every personality type out there, but I just don't do cocky)
  • Hunter/Sportsman
  • Stubborn/Not Easily Pushed Around
  • Appreciates Agriculture (bonus points for being involved in it)
  • Good with Children
  • Not afraid of spiders (I actually am not afraid of bugs, but I had an ex that I had to kill spiders for and its just not a turn on)
  • Not afraid of mice (I am petrified of mice)
  • Not afraid of snakes (again terrified of snakes, I needed someone brave!)
  • Similar Music Preferences (here I rattled off the all kinds of music I liked and didn't like...and bands he had to like/dislike.....this actually lead to the impossible to fulfill comment) The Hubby actually is similar though. He prefers classic country to modern country, likes rock & roll, doesn't listen to rap, and more importantly has heard of and owns Flogging Molly and The Dropkick Murphys!
I feel so fortunate to have such a great man in my life...forever! Really, sometimes I am amazed, I get to the spend the rest of my life with this guy. We are a sappy couple (though not over-the-top PDA), in public our hands and fingers do seem to find each others....probably more of my doing. We hold hands as we walk down the street, or our fingers brush when out with friends. That is one of the hardest things so far about this deployment, him not being there. I mean that sounds obvious, but really, it’s an intangible emptiness. Even if I am spoiled and we have been able to FaceTime lately, and seeing his face and hearing his voice does make me swoon...the weird empty feeling of missing his hand holding mine makes his absence painful.

Did you ever make a list of things you were looking for/wanted in a partner?
If so did this list match your mate?

Photo Bomb 14

Dear Hubby,

This week was wrought of worry and stress, but at the end things turned out just fine.  The daycare drama seemed to continue or at least keep cropping up.  With summer help leaving Friday there was question as to whether they would be staffed enough for the current enrollment.  I don't know for sure what would have happened if they hadn't gotten someone hired in the nick of time, but in my mind as our boys were the newest children they would probably also be the first to lose their spot. No worries though, we are golden!

I took another try at haircuts for the boys...at home! (I know you haven't been impressed with my attempts at giving you a high & tight, but I was just going for a buzz job)  The Big D was pretty squirmy and had something stuck in his hair that I didn't notice until after I started.  I was trying to trim the end with scissors before using the electric razor...and we had a mishap.  The Toddler's went pretty good actually.  I did not do a good job of taking a lot of pictures for you this week...but some of the ones I did get should prove just how much I WE all love you!

The Toddler is currently sitting on my lap and would like me to "stop computering" because he would like  to "tickle the keys" and "write to Daddy".  So without further ado, the following is a message from your oldest son:

I'm going to go with the translation of:
Hi Daddy, I love you and miss bunches and bunches and really want to be able to talk to you right now.  Mom says I can't because your job makes it hard to schedule times to call, so instead I am writing you this letter.  I wanted to let you know that we are all praying for you everyday and can't wait for you to be home again. - Toddler out.

As always we love you beyond all measure, stay safe.  We are one week closer to being together again!

Our handsome little men (pre-haircuts)
